The Digital Color Awards.

Digital Color provides recognition for outstanding contemporary artists. It has accepted nominations for and granted monthly awards since September 1999. Artwork of the nominees that is exhibited on Digital Consciousness and elsewhere on the Internet is judged by a jury.

The winner is announced on the 23rd of each month through the Digital Consciousness newsletter and other media. The winner is entitled to free gallery service from Digital Consciousness for one year. This includes gallery hosting and access to an Internet Publishing Robot that allows for upload of images and information and for editing through a control panel.

The work of the winning artist is featured on the Digital Color Artist of the Month page for a month and thereafter in the Permanent Gallery of Digital Color Winners. Current nominees are listed on the Digital Color Current Nominees page. Links to previous nominees are on the Digital Color Previous Nominees page.

Matthew Bates is the October 2004 Artist of the Month. Matthew was born in Washington, D.C. in 1970. He attended the Academy of Art College in San Francisco, and moved to Firenze in 1992. He creates images which stretch reality with three perspective points. This technique, “Magic Realism,” allows us to see a realistic image in a magical context. It is as if we had three sets of eyes spying on the world all at once.

Matthew's technique has been molded by mathematical principals as well. In several of his paintings he has used Fibonacci Rectangles, or the Golden Ratio, to create the design of the painting. He has had exhibitions in Washington D.C., Firenze, Spain, New York City and Virginia.

Miguel Angel Avila
Miguel Angel Avila is the December 2004 Digital Color Artist of the Month. Houston-based Avila was born in California in 1975 and raised in Monterrey, Mexico. Driven by a natural talent, he layers his meditative work with references to culture, art and the self.

He offers us works that at first appear direct and simple, but on reflection are complex and vibrant. They describe an ideal world, and at the same time the real one; modern Mexico: industrialized, chaotic and beautiful, a container of naïve memories. And, American society: individualist, highly commercial, superficial and visually attractive, a container of impressive memories and huge disappointments.
